Edge of Empire

In 1960, on board the SS Corfu bound for Singapore, in the ship's library, an adored father shows his wide-eyed six-year-old son a map of the world. The boy is thrilled when he understands the 'areas shaded pink on the map' are his and his father's world.

Eight years later his idyllic boyhood, spent in the dwindling days of the British Empire, comes to an abrupt end. Standing on the deck of the SS Achille Lauro, leaving Singapore bound for Britain, the pain of separation dives deep and roots itself like a tropical vine.

Over the next fifty-five years the tendrils of that vine grow and extend through Europe, Russia, Africa, India and Southeast Asia as the boy, now a man, searches for himself and the lost Empire of his father.

The truth, when discovered, like all truth, is never what you think it is. In this case it's discovered on a concrete floor in a tiny, dark, dilapidated prison cell in Singapore's notorious Changi Prison.

Edge of Empire is one man's search for meaning on the lost landscape of Empire. It is his memento mori.
